FOUR major Redlands Coast sporting grounds are set to receive significant upgrades, with modern, sustainable LED lighting to be installed under a multi-million-dollar program aimed at improving facilities for players, clubs and supporters.
New lighting will be delivered at EGW Wood Sportsfield in Wellington Point, Redlands Softball Park in Ormiston and Redlands Baseball Park in Capalaba through funding from the South East Queensland (SEQ) Liveability Fund, with Redland City Council separately funding the installation of new lighting at John Fredericks Park in Capalaba.
As part of the broader program, Redlands Cricket has also marked a major milestone for new lighting at Peter Burge Oval, hosting an official soil turning ceremony to celebrate the start of works that will significantly enhance local cricket infrastructure.
The ceremony was attended by Mayor Jos Mitchell, State Member for Oodgeroo Amanda Stoker, Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike, Councillor Wendy Boglary, Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson, Queensland Cricket Infrastructure Manager Tom Gibson, Redlands Cricket President Sean Lloyd, Redlands Cricket Secretary Craig MacNair, and Redlands Sporting Club President Don Seccombe.
Mayor Mitchell said the lighting upgrades would deliver important benefits for clubs using the facilities.
“This is great news for members, players and supporters at Redlands Rays Baseball Club, Redlands Softball Association, Capalaba Warriors Rugby League Football Club and Redlands Tigers Cricket Club,” she said.
“All four clubs have been advocating for improved lighting at their fields, and I’m pleased to see these works coming to fruition.”
Sport and Recreation portfolio representative Cr Jason Colley said the new lighting would create fresh opportunities across the region.
“The installation of LED lighting will allow our future champions to practise and play like the professionals,” he said.
At Peter Burge Oval, the lighting upgrade will deliver Class III Sports Lighting, enabling extended hours of play, safer conditions, and greater opportunities for training and competition.
The project is being supported by Cricket Australia in partnership with Queensland Cricket and represents the culmination of efforts by the Redlands Cricket Committee to secure funding through the SEQ City Deal, with contributions from all three levels of government.
Redlands Cricket President Sean Lloyd said the project would have a lasting impact on the local community.
“This project is a game-changer for our community,” he said.
The Australian and Queensland Governments are contributing a combined $4.4 million towards the projects at EGW Wood Sportsfield, Redlands Softball Park and Redlands Baseball Park through the SEQ Liveability Fund.
