In the morning the sky is clear, by late afternoon it has built up and drenched us in rain, wind and even hail.

These storms can cause real damage, and while we can’t control the weather, we can control how prepared we are.

A small amount of planning now can save you money, stress and days of disruption later.

KNOW YOUR HOME INSURANCE POLICY

Before the worst of the storms roll in, take a few minutes to understand your insurance cover. Too many people only discover gaps in their policy after their roof is leaking, or a tree has come down.

Look closely at your home and contents cover: what is included, what is excluded, and whether storm and flood damage are clearly listed. Check your sum insured as well.

If your home or contents are underinsured, you may only receive a fraction of what you need to rebuild or replace. If anything is unclear, pick up the phone and ask your insurer for a plain-English explanation.

SHOP AROUND

When comparing insurance, resist the temptation to focus only on the premium. A cheap policy might look attractive, but if it delivers poor coverage or slow claims service when you need it, it can become the most expensive mistake you make.

Compare the level of protection, brand reputation and customer reviews. Look for policies that clearly address storm, hail and flood events. Good insurance should give you a sense of confidence, not doubt.

SMART EXCESS

Your excess is the amount you must pay upfront when you make a claim. Many people set their excess too high in exchange for a cheaper premium, only to find themselves unable to afford that excess when disaster strikes.

Choose a level you could comfortably pay tomorrow. If a storm damaged your roof this weekend, could you pay the excess without dipping into debt or delaying essential repairs? If not, adjust it.

The right excess protects your finances instead of adding pressure.

TOP UP YOUR EMERGENCY SAVINGS

A practical step during storm season is to ensure your emergency fund includes at least the full amount of your policy excess. This means you can act quickly if you need to lodge a claim.

Add a little extra to cover temporary accommodation, essential repairs or replacing immediate necessities. Even a small emergency fund delivers peace of mind when the weather turns wild and helps you avoid debt.

NO NEED FOR A CRISIS

Storm season will always bring surprises, but your finances don’t need to. Taking a few small steps now helps you move through the season with more confidence.
