The State Government has moved to take control of a key site at Weinam Creek in a bid to fast-track long-promised car parking for Redlands mainland and island residents.
The State will acquire land from the Redlands Investment Corporation to progress delivery of additional parking, following the collapse of a neighbouring development that had been tied to earlier plans.
The acquisition follows a decision by Redland City Council in December 2025 to terminate a development agreement that would have delivered a multi-level carpark as part of a broader retail project.
The site sits within the Weinam Creek Priority Development Area, allowing Economic Development Queensland to use compulsory acquisition powers to secure the land and accelerate the project.
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the move would unlock a long-awaited solution for the Redlands community.
“The Crisafulli Government does what we say we’re going to do, and we won’t allow inaction by others to be a barrier,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.
“It’s regrettable that for more than two years after the preferred development partner was announced, the Council opted to terminate its partnership, which impacted building the long-awaited carpark next door.
“As such, Economic Development Queensland is using its compulsory acquisition powers to step in, secure and fast track a solution the community has been crying out for over many years.”
The State said planning for the carpark was already well advanced, with design, approvals and construction contracting progressing.
Member for Redlands Rebecca Young said the project would address ongoing parking shortages affecting island residents travelling to the mainland.
“Right now, residents on the likes of Russell, Macleay, Karragarra and Lamb Island have struggled to even do simple things like visiting a doctor, getting groceries and other parts of daily life that we can take for granted on the mainland, simply because there’s nowhere to park,” Mrs Young said.
“We promised the people of Redlands a fresh start and we’re taking action to ensure there are no further delays and indecision.”
