Giant marrows, mysterious murders and a cat buried under the mango tree are some of the subjects explored in Mates Theatre Genesis’ Seniors Perform production to be staged at the Donald Simpson Community Centre, Cleveland from October 19-29.

Seniors Perform highlights a vast array of stories of the Third Age written and performed by seniors in conjunction with Queensland Seniors month.

MATES’ Anna Bober chose 10 stories to develop into performance pieces for act two of the show, chosen from a diverse and imaginative range of about 20 submitted stories.

MATES Seniors will share observations of life over 60, the impacts of ageing, family dynamics, finding freedom and the process of mellowing.

Act one will include two short murder mysteries Under the Mango Tree and Much Ado About Marrows, written by Redlands’ Sheryl Millard, and directed by Suzanne Kelly.

Suzanne said both pieces would be presented as ‘read and move’ plays.

“This allows actors to perform with script in hand eliminating the need to learn lines and ideal for enabling seniors to be involved in theatre,” she said.

Seniors Perform is an annual initiative of Mates Theatre Genesis to provide opportunities for seniors to participate in all aspects of live theatre.

The program is assisted by funding from the Queensland Government and support from Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland.

Mates Theatre Genesis Inc. was established in 1990, making it the longest running community local theatre group.

It is not-for-profit and run by volunteers with a common vision to nurture an inclusive performing arts community.

Members enjoy opportunities to participate in all aspects of theatre, access to workshops and social networking. Membership fees are $20.

Shows are at 6.30pm on October 19, 20, 26 and 27 and at 3pm on October 22 and 29.
Tickets are $10 and can be booked online at matestg.org.au or over the phone on 0492 875 853.
