A Wellington Point real estate agent has broken her silence on one of the most talked-about moments from the Married At First Sight Australia Reunion insisting the so-called “bikini photo scandal” was “something made out of nothing”.
Stephanie Marshall found herself at the centre of the drama when it was revealed she had been messaging fellow participant Danny, including sending a bikini photo sparking a furious reaction from his ex, Bec.
But speaking in an interview, Ms Marshall said the interaction had been completely innocent and lacked any form of flirtation.
“There was literally no flirtation… there was nothing behind it,” she said.
“All the messages, including the bikini shot, they’re all out there now and people can read them. It just goes to show there was nothing going on.”
The messages, which later surfaced publicly, showed the pair chatting about everyday topics including life and work, with the conversation naturally shifting into real estate — a shared industry.
Ms Marshall said the photo itself had already been posted to social media during a work trip to Hamilton Island and was sent casually as part of that broader conversation.
“I really do think something got made out of nothing,” she said.
‘Caught in the crossfire’
While the Reunion confrontation quickly turned explosive, Ms Marshall said, in hindsight, she did not believe the reaction was entirely about her.
“I don’t think a great deal of it was to do with me,” she said.
“I think a lot of it came from a place of Bec just being so hurt by what happened between her and Danny and I just got caught in the crossfire.
“Looking back now, especially seeing some of the unseen footage, I’m actually heartbroken for her.”
Despite standing by her actions, she admitted the situation had been difficult to watch back.
“It is upsetting to know that something I’ve done — completely innocently — has made someone else feel that way,” she said.
“I don’t like that.”
However, she also said she did not deserve the way she was spoken to during the heated exchange.
Apology after the fallout
The fallout did not end on screen, with Ms Marshall revealing Danny later contacted her directly to apologise.
“I hadn’t spoken to him since the show, but he actually called me on Saturday… which really surprised me,” she said.
“He rang to apologise, which was really kind.
“If people saw the reunion, they would’ve seen what he said — telling me to “f*** off” and calling me a “filthy little skank”. That was hard to watch, especially when it felt like it was done for airtime.”
The apology followed an unaired moment from the Reunion, where Danny lashed out at Ms Marshall.
“I don’t want airtime if it means being yelled at like that,” she said.
‘Pressure cooker’ environment
Ms Marshall said the intensity of the show itself played a significant role in how situations escalated.
“It’s a pressure cooker environment,” she said.
“You’re living with someone you’ve just met, filming day in and day out, completely controlled by schedules and cameras.”
She said tensions were inevitable in that setting, even without producer influence.
“I think they’ve done the show long enough to know that in that kind of environment, it’s just a matter of time before things boil over,” she said.
While some participants have criticised production, Ms Marshall said her experience was positive.
“I had a great relationship with producers… I never felt manipulated or controlled,” she said.
“People might say producers guide conversations or ask questions to draw things out — but at the end of the day, what people say and how they behave is their own choice.”
New partner stands by her
Amid the fallout, Ms Marshall said she had strong support from her new partner, Aaron, who has watched the drama unfold publicly.
“I’m really grateful for Aaron — he’s handled this really, really well,” she said.
“I mean, imagine starting a relationship with someone and then saying, ‘Hey, by the way, I’m on MAFS and it comes out in a couple of months.’ Who really wants that?”
She said he had remained supportive throughout, despite the intense scrutiny that comes with the show.
“He’s honestly handled it like an absolute champ,” she said.
Ms Marshall said she had also been fortunate to avoid significant public backlash.
“I think I managed to go through the show and hold it together,” she said.
“It is such a pressure cooker environment… and I think people need to remember that.”
Moving on
Despite the drama, Ms Marshall was adamant there was never anything more than friendship between her and Danny.
“He’s a friend — that’s it,” she said.
“I choose my friendships based on how people treat me. He’s lovely to me, and I’m lovely back.”
She said she had no interest in being drawn into ongoing conflict.
“I’m not here to be getting caught up in Bec and Danny’s drama,” she said.
“At the end of the day, it is what it is.”
