LONG-AWAITED works on the Lindum Crossing upgrade are set to move ahead, with Federal Member for Bonner Kara Cook confirming construction activity will begin on site next month.
The Federal Government has committed $85 million towards the project, with Energex works scheduled to start this month ahead of major construction in 2027.
The upgrade has faced significant delays while Brisbane City Council completed final design work required for the project.
Ms Cook said the completion of those designs had cleared the way for the next stage.
“This is an important step forward for our community and I’m pleased to see this critical safety upgrade finally progressing,” she said.
“The Federal Government has been ready to move ahead and has been waiting on Brisbane City Council to finalise the designs needed to unlock the next stages of the project.”
However, Brisbane City Council says that while the previous Federal Government signed off on jointly funding the project with Council and the State Government, the Albanese Government has so far refused to contribute the final $65 million in funding.
“Rail crossings are generally the responsibility of State and Federal governments, but we’ve committed $40 million towards open level crossing projects across Brisbane,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.
“It’s disappointing the Federal Government continues to delay the final funding package for this important safety project while Brisbane’s population continues to grow.”
Wynnum Manly Councillor Alex Givney said Lindum Station was a busy part of the community, so she was thrilled to see this next stage moving ahead.
“Local residents expect their Federal representatives to fight for projects like this and secure Brisbane’s fair share of infrastructure funding,” she said.
