Choosing a home care provider is one of the biggest decisions many older Australians and their families will make, with experts urging people to ask the right questions before committing to a service.

As more seniors choose to remain living independently at home, finding a provider that delivers personalised, reliable and flexible care has become increasingly important.

Home care provider Right at Home Australia says asking detailed questions early can help families find a provider that not only meets their current needs but can continue to provide support as circumstances change.
Among the most important questions is how clients and their families will be involved in care decisions

A quality provider should ensure the older person’s wishes remain at the centre of every decision while involving family members or trusted representatives where appropriate.

Consistency is another key consideration.

Having the same support worker regularly can help build trust and familiarity, while families should also ask what happens if a regular carer is unavailable due to illness or leave and whether they will have a say in choosing a replacement.

Understanding the qualifications and ongoing training of carers is equally important, along with asking how the provider monitors the quality of care through regular reviews, care notes and check-ins.

Experts also recommend asking how flexible services are if care needs change over time.

Whether recovering from a hospital stay or managing a progressive health condition, a provider should be able to adjust support quickly and offer a broad range of services, including personal care, domestic assistance, nursing, dementia support and palliative care if required.

Transparency around costs is another area families should not overlook.

Before signing any agreement, older Australians should ensure they understand what services are included, any additional fees that may apply and how ongoing costs will be communicated.

Regular reviews of a care plan are also essential to ensure services continue to reflect a person’s changing health, lifestyle and goals.

Right at Home Australia says choosing a home care provider should be viewed as selecting a long-term partner rather than simply arranging a service.

“Finding the right care partner starts with asking the right questions,” the organisation said.

With Australia’s new Support at Home program placing greater emphasis on personalised aged care, industry experts say taking the time to compare providers and ask informed questions can give older Australians greater confidence in choosing care that supports their independence, dignity and quality of life.
