For an increasing number of Australians, retirement is no longer about putting their feet up, but more about putting the caravan into action.
The grey nomad lifestyle continues to surge in popularity, with retirees embracing the freedom to swap cold winters for sunshine, busy schedules for open roads and the comforts of home for Australia’s spectacular backyard.
According to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, Australians aged over 55 accounted for 59 per cent of all caravan and camping trips in 2025.
They also tend to stay away longer than younger travellers, averaging four-day trips compared with 3.1 nights for those aged between 30 and 54.
More people are easing themselves into the lifestyle long before retirement, purchasing caravans early allow those looking ahead to retirement to gradually build confidence through shorter holidays and help with becoming comfortable with towing, setting up camp and adapting to life in a much smaller space before embarking on extended adventures.
Today, travelling has become a way of life for a lot of retirees with winter meaning heading north in search of warmer weather, while the simplicity of caravan living has become one of its greatest attractions.
With fewer possessions, less housework and more time spent outdoors, each day revolves around enjoying the places they visit rather than maintaining the home they left behind.
As thousands of retirees once again point their vehicles towards new destinations this winter, the list of favourites for many continue to offer plenty of inspiration.
Byron Bay remains a favourite for its relaxed atmosphere, coastal walks and natural beauty, while Mooloolaba
continues to draw visitors with its pristine beaches, waterfront cafes and vibrant esplanade.
Just down the road, Alexandra Headland offers picturesque ocean views, while Coolangatta combines golden sands with easy access to the Gold Coast Hinterland, where travellers can explore Lamington National Park, waterfalls and the famous glow worm caves at Tamborine Mountain.
