GREEN LIGHT FOR OLYMPIC PRECINCT

THE massive Birkdale Community Precinct has taken another step towards becoming reality with Redland City Council locking in the planning framework that will guide the delivery of the multi-million-dollar project.

Councillors have endorsed the final Local Government Infrastructure Designation (LGID), paving the way for the designation to be formally made by the council’s chief executive officer before being gazetted by the Queensland Government.

The planning framework provides the statutory approval pathway for the entire precinct, including the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Redland Whitewater Centre.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the decision marked a major milestone for what she described as a “once-in-a-generation” project for Redlands Coast.

Finalising the Local Government Infrastructure Designation is a critical milestone in turning the vision into reality,” Cr Talty said.

The LGID gives Council and the community certainty around how the precinct will be planned, designed and delivered, while ensuring strong environmental protections and appropriate infrastructure are in place.”

The designation establishes a whole-of-precinct approval framework under the Planning Act and aligns with the adopted master plan following years of community consultation.

It also incorporates mandatory conditions imposed by the Queensland Government covering environmental protection, transport and access, bushfire management and water quality.

Cr Talty said the requirements would ensure the precinct was developed responsibly without delaying the overall project.

They will influence how and when elements of the project are delivered, but importantly, they do not prevent the precinct from moving forward,” she said.

The planning milestone follows the Australian Government’s earlier environmental approval, which found the project was “not a controlled action – particular manner” under federal environmental laws, allowing it to proceed subject to strict conditions.

Council says the streamlined planning framework will reduce development risk while supporting delivery of major community infrastructure, parklands and the Olympic whitewater venue.

Cr Talty said the project would leave a lasting legacy beyond the 2032 Games.

This is about putting the right planning foundations in place to deliver a precinct that supports our community, protects our environment, and creates lasting social and economic benefits,” she said.

She also confirmed the heritage-listed Willards Farm would continue to be activated through guided walking tours, allowing visitors to experience one of Redlands Coast’s most significant 19th-century farming sites as the broader precinct is developed.
