CARINDALE could become one of Brisbane’s key high-density housing hubs, with buildings of up to 25 storeys proposed around Westfield Carindale and a future transport interchange.
The changes form part of Brisbane City Council’s Major Centres Review, which also proposes higher buildings at Indooroopilly and Nundah to create thousands of additional homes near public transport, shopping, employment and services.
For Carindale, the revised plan would allow buildings up to 25 storeys around the shopping centre and proposed transport interchange – reduced from an earlier 30-storey proposal after community feedback.
Nearby land east of Carindale St, towards Bulimba Creek, could accommodate buildings up to 10 storeys, with the tallest development intended to remain concentrated closer to the shopping centre.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the approach was designed to deliver more housing in established, well-serviced locations rather than expanding further into low-density suburbs and bushland.
“Brisbane needs more homes and where they’re built matters,” Cr Schrinner said.
“Indooroopilly, Carindale and Nundah already have the public transport, shops, jobs and services people need close to home. Building more homes in places like these gives people more choice and makes it easier to get around without relying on a car for every trip.”
The review received 195 submissions when it went out for community consultation earlier this year.
Council said that feedback had helped shape the updated proposal including the reduction in Carindale’s proposed maximum height.
Cr Schrinner said concentrating taller development around major centres would help protect Brisbane’s established suburban character elsewhere.
“We’ve listened to residents and made changes,” he said.
