CONSTRUCTION of the much-anticipated Carina Women’s Shed has officially begun, marking a major milestone for a community project that has been years in the making.
The new facility, to be located within the Clem Jones Centre precinct, is jointly funded by Brisbane City Council and the Carina Leagues Club and will provide a dedicated space for women to connect, learn and build new skills.
The concept for the shed emerged from a community consultation session hosted by Councillor Lisa Atwood in 2023 where about 200 local women gathered to share ideas and help shape the vision for the project.
Once completed, the Carina Women’s Shed will offer a welcoming environment for women of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, providing opportunities to learn practical skills, share knowledge, build friendships and support one another.
The organisation was established in response to growing demand for accessible community spaces where women can connect and participate in hands-on activities.
Over the coming years, the shed will develop a range of programs and activities focused on learning, wellbeing and community connection, while also building partnerships with local organisations and volunteers.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the start of construction was a significant achievement.
“The start of construction is an exciting milestone for the Carina Women’s Shed and the many local women who have worked hard to bring this vision to life,” he said.
“This will be a welcoming space where women can come together to learn new skills and support one another.
“Projects like this add to our fantastic lifestyle and help create stronger communities as people to connect closer to home.”
Cr Atwood said the project would create lasting benefits for local women.
“I’m so excited by the opportunity for local women – this space will be an incredible place where women of all ages can connect and learn,” she said.
“It’s fantastic to see construction getting underway and the vision taking shape after years of planning and am truly grateful to the committee for their hard work.”
Carina Leagues Club chairman Wade Core welcomed the partnership behind the project.
“The Carina Leagues Club is extremely proud to be partnering with Carina Women’s Shed,” he said.
“It is a welcome addition to our local community and will provide enormous benefits to all who use the shed.”
Carina Women’s Shed president Lynda Kempnich said the facility would leave a significant legacy.
“The Carina Women’s Shed is a magnificent legacy for women,” she said.
“For generations, women have been craving a shared space to expand their creative interests.
“The Carina Women’s Shed is a volunteer-based community charity dedicated to bringing women together in a safe and inclusive space – where they can connect, share skills and learn from one another, all in the spirit of reducing loneliness and isolation and enhancing wellbeing and happiness.”
BMD Group chief executive Scott Power said the company was proud to be involved in the project.
The Carina Women’s Shed is expected to become a valuable community asset, offering opportunities for recreation, personal development and social connection for women across Brisbane’s eastern suburbs.
