ONE of the region’s most popular family events, the Brisbane Kite Festival, returns to the Minnippi Parklands at Tingalpa this Sunday.

Run by the Rotary Clubs of Carindale and South East Brisbane, the organisers are hoping for blue skies, with crowds in the thousands expected.

This year’s festival will be held in the grounds of the Tingalpa Model Aero Club within the Minnippi Parklands off Stanton Rd West.

The event was first held in 2011 at the Murarrie Recreation Reserve at Cannon Hill before moving to the Tingalpa Model Aero Club in 2023.

Rotary Brisbane South East treasurer Colleen Orange said the event saw a huge increase in crowd numbers the first year after Covid, and attendance had more than doubled in recent years, with organisers planning for a crowd of more than 7000 on Sunday.

“What we love about it is to put on an event that the community can come out to and have a family day out flying kites, running around and enjoying themselves – and it’s quite wonderful to see,” Mrs Orange said.

Doboy Councillor Lisa Atwood said the festival had become a citywide event, with families coming from all corners of Brisbane.

“This is a wonderful day out for families, kite lovers and anyone who wants to enjoy a vibrant community atmosphere,” Cr Atwood said.

The festival will also feature rides, food trucks, a sausage sizzle and a magic show and runs from 10am-3pm. Alternative parking for the Model Aero Club grounds is on Kate St and Preston Rd in Carina.
