FOUR riders from the Redlands Cycling and Multisport Club (RCMC) travelled north to compete in the Queensland State Championships, returning with an impressive haul of podium finishes across three tough disciplines: the criterium, road race, and individual time trial (ITT).

Representing the club were Simon Phuah, Kelly Phuah, Julie Rappo and Sally McLean, each tackling a challenging race program in perfect weather conditions on the criterium track and the roads around Bundaberg.

The championship weekend began with the criterium, where all Masters women (WM3 to WM9) started together.

The event was delayed after a serious crash in a preceding men’s race, which saw one rider taken to hospital.

Despite the unsettling incident, the RCMC women showed determination at the start line.

During the race, another crash occurred directly in front of McLean, who narrowly avoided disaster.

Rappo was forced onto the grass to steer clear, highlighting the technical demands of the circuit and the strength of the field.

Despite the chaos, RCMC’s riders powered through:

  • Kelly Phuah claimed first in her age group.
  • Julie Rappo secured second.
  • Sally McLean took first with a personal best 20-minute power output, riding solo for much of the race.
  • Simon Phuah finished second in his age group, narrowly missing the top spot.

Saturday’s road race featured a scenic but tough 18.2km lap through the rolling countryside of Tirroan.

The women completed three laps (54km), while the men raced four laps (72km).

RCMC continued their form with another strong showing:

  • Kelly Phuah – First in her age group.
  • Julie Rappo – Second
  • Sally McLean – First
  • Simon Phuah – Sixth in a highly competitive field.

Sunday’s ITT on was an out and back on a smooth rolling course along Bucca Rd.

RCMC riders delivered a clean sweep in the time trial:

  • Kelly Phuah, Julie Rappo and Sally McLean each secured first place in their respective age groups.

The RCMC team’s performance at the State Championships was not only a testament to their training and resilience but also a celebration of camaraderie, sportsmanship and the enduring spirit of competition.
