REDLANDS leaders have united to tackle the often-damaging effects of online bullying, launching a new campaign urging greater respect in digital spaces.

The Respect 4 You, Respect 4 Me advocacy campaign aims to foster respectful dialogue and positive online interactions,

The campaign follows a Notice of Motion from Division 9 Councillor Jason Colley at the December 2024 meeting.

Cr Colley said poor online behaviour could have devastating and sometimes tragic consequences.

“As civic leaders, we anticipate a degree of public scrutiny, but this often stretches well beyond reasonable comment, can extend to Council staff, and can be harmful,” he said. “It also sets a very poor example for younger generations.”

Division 3 Councillor Paul Golle said the issue went beyond just harsh words, and included misinformation and coordinated online attacks.

“Residents should be aware of a growing issue involving fake accounts and fraudulent pages spreading misinformation and targeting individuals in our community,” he said.

“It has come to light that individuals using fake names are linked to pages engaging in harassment and misinformation.”

He said the platforms claimed to provide community updates but instead appeared to be tools for spreading false narratives.

“Misinformation and online harassment have no place in our community,” he said.

“If you come across these pages, be aware of their intent, and consider reporting them to the eSafety Commissioner.”
