AFTER winning Bonner, new Labor MP Kara Cook has laid out an ambitious agenda focused on cost-of-living relief, better healthcare, and community support.
Ms Cook, a former Brisbane City councillor, said she planned to bring a grassroots approach to Canberra, shaped by her experience in local government and a strong connection to the community.
“My top three priorities are tackling cost-of-living pressures, improving access to healthcare, and supporting local community organisations and sporting groups who are the heart and soul of our local area,” she said.
Also high on her agenda is delivering tangible relief for households grappling with rising expenses.
“I’ll be fighting for urgent cost-of-living relief, including energy bill support and better access to bulk-billed healthcare including building a new Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in Bonner,” she said.
She highlighted a range of federal measures she will advocate for to support families in the electorate.
“I’ll advocate for targeted federal support for individuals and families from cheaper medicines, being able to see a GP for free, energy bill relief and cheaper childcare to supporting a tax cut for every single resident in Bonner,” she said.
During her campaign, Ms Cook said voters were clear about the issues that mattered most to them.
“Voters told us they want action on cost of living, housing, and health. They want someone who’s present, listening and delivering for them,” she said.
She said her approach to representing Bonner would remain people-focused.
“My time in local government taught me that politics works best when it’s closest to the people. I’ll bring that grassroots focus to Canberra,” Cook said.
“I’ll stay visible and accountable, through regular mobile offices, community forums, and by making sure people know they can reach out and be heard.
“Queensland has sent a strong message, we want a government that listens, leads with compassion and delivers for working families and those most vulnerable in our community,” she said.
“I’ll be a strong voice for that change and ensuring that all voices are heard.
“I look forward to working closely with the Prime Minister and Cabinet to ensure Bonner’s needs are front and centre in national decision-making.”
