WYNNUM’S street art scene is headed for a significant transformation with the appointment of Matt Tervo as the city’s first-ever Street Art Consultant.
Mr Tervo was recently approached by Cr Alex Givney to bring his vision and unique strategies to Wynnum and elevate the area’s street art to a level worthy of international recognition.
“Brisbane is home to some of the best street artists and muralists in the world,” Mr Tervo said.
“But that cultural and economic asset hasn’t been capitalised on in the way it should have been.
“I’m advising on how Council can reach their goal of being recognised locally and internationally as a world leader in street art.”
Cr Givney is excited for what Mr Tervo’s expertise will bring to Wynnum.
“Public art gives local and recognised artists a chance to shine and helps attract more people to local businesses, supporting local jobs,” she said.
“We are excited to identify more spaces for public art across the suburbs, and create more to see and do on the Bayside.”
Mr Tervo has been consulting for Brisbane City Council since November 2024 and has deep connections within the street art community.
“Working with the local community and building their trust is essential for successful street art projects,” he said.
“Investing in murals can make people want to explore new areas, which has a positive flow-on effect for local businesses; murals can guide an audience through a space, making them want to explore and discover more about the area.”
Mr Tervo clarified that local business owners, residents and artists have been working on a street art plan for a long time now, and that there’s already been a huge effort that he plans to strengthen.
“Cr Givney asked me to come and give my thoughts when she met me,” Mr Tervo said.
“She is very passionate about revitalising her community.”
Mr Tervo’s research involves spending time in the area and engaging with local businesses.
Mr Tervo is from Ransome and lived around Wynnum as a young child, making him the perfect consultant with his own roots to the area.
“I know Wynnum very well and love it,” he said.
He believes that the area’s mix of beautiful weather, scenic views, and local businesses creates an ideal environment for large-scale street art installations.
With the 2032 Olympics on the horizon, he sees an opportunity for Brisbane to showcase its internationally renowned local artists and street art to the world.
