THE Russell Island community is set to benefit from a major upgrade to the island’s bowls club, thanks to a $2.5 million commitment by the Coalition should it be elected to government this year.
Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike made the announcement at the club’s “Last Day on the Green” event.
The funding will go towards the first stage of the development, with the aim of transforming the Russell Island Bowls Club into a community hub designed to cater to the diverse needs of residents and visitors.
“This beautiful island is growing rapidly. New investment is needed to meet these increasing needs,” Mr Pike said.
“Unfortunately, for too long Russell Island has been overlooked for critical infrastructure grants and development.”
Mr Pike expressed his delight in announcing the $2.5 million commitment, which will help kickstart the Stage 1 development of the bowls club.
He emphasised the importance of this investment for the future of the island community, noting that the upgraded facility would serve residents well for years to come.
“I’m delighted to announce this Coalition commitment of $2.5 million that will kickstart the stage 1 development of the bowls club and will ensure this community hub serves the island well into the future,” Mr Pike said.
Russell Island Bowls Club has been a cornerstone of the tight-knit island community since 1981.
In addition to providing a venue for lawn bowls, the club hosts social and cultural events that bring locals together.
Under the proposed development plan, the funding will be used to expand the clubhouse, turning it into a purpose-built space for people of all ages to gather for sports, education, cultural activities, and social events.
“This is something the community has really been crying out for,” Mr Pike said.
“It’s an honour to make this announcement today.
“Russell Island will no longer be forgotten.
“It will instead get the investment that the entire community deserves.”
