WITH the new school term underway, drivers are being urged to prioritise safety and remain vigilant in school zones.
Reduced speed limits of 40kmh are back in effect, aimed at protecting children as they travel to and from school.
Most school zones are active from 7am-9am and 2-4pm, though some operate all day from 7am-4pm, as indicated by signage.
Young children, especially those new to school, are among the most vulnerable on the roads.
They are often unpredictable and easily distracted, making it crucial for drivers to stay alert and ready to react to changing circumstances in active school zones.
“We all want to ensure that children arrive at school and return home safely,” said a safety spokesperson.
Guidelines for drivers:
- Follow speed limits: Adhere to school zone speed restrictions and keep a close eye on road conditions.
- Stay alert: Children’s behaviour can be sudden and unpredictable, requiring heightened awareness.
- Observe signage: School zones are clearly marked, leaving no room for excuses.
- Parents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with their child’s school drop-off and pick-up zones.
These areas are carefully designated to maintain student safety.
During busy pick-up and drop-off times, drivers should remain patient and vigilant, obeying all parking and loading signs.
Parking in bus zones is strictly prohibited unless operating a bus with over 12 seats.
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to educate their children on road safety, including crossing streets, waiting at bus stops, and staying within designated areas.
