MORETON Bay is set to benefit from enhanced recreational fishing efforts as part of a new initiative announced in November.

OzFish, a key Australian charity focused on fish habitat restoration, welcomed the move, which aims to support local biodiversity and improve water quality.

The organisation has been working on several restoration projects across Queensland, including rebuilding oyster reefs in Moreton Bay and the Nerang River, and restoring saltwater creeks in Cairns and the Gold Coast.

OzFish CEO Cass Price stressed the importance of streamlining approval processes for environmental restoration projects to accelerate progress.

“To have thriving fish populations, we need functional fish habitats,” she said.

Ms Price also called for greater government support to empower local communities in improving their waterways.

The efforts align with a broader push by the Restoration Decade Alliance, which warns that Australia has just six years to restore ecosystems and prevent further biodiversity loss and climate change.
