EARLIER this month Cameron Turvey took his 5m run-about down to Tingalpa Creek to see if the prawns were running.
The Alexandra Hills man came away with four dozen, keeping some to eat and using the rest as bait.
“It’s a bit early in the season, so I might wait a while before I go back. I was testing the waters,” he said.
Cameron cast his net for the prawns, then spent time fishing off the side of the boat, catching a dozen or so bream, the largest about 30cm.
He was fishing with his 11-year-old son Silas, just as his father had with him when he was the same age.
“I’ve been fishing with my Dad all my life. And now Silas has been fishing with me for all of his life,” Cameron said.
He also fishes with his two older brothers, Ian of Thornlands and Matt of Alexandra Hills, something he said was a bonding experience.
“We go out together and we also plan camping and fishing trips as well. It’s something we all enjoy,” Cameron said.
He said his father, who now lives in Adelaide Hills, tells him that fishing is the thing he misses most.
Cameron said his earliest memories were of fishing with his father and brothers for tailor and dart at Fraser Island.
“It was just me and my brothers fishing for three days during the tailor run. We would fish, and eat fish and sandy vegemite sandwiches,” he said.
For Cameron, fishing is about the challenge and the technical aspects of the sport.
“There are so many different types of fishing for different types of fish. I like the challenge of doing it all,” he said. “I haven’t caught bream for a while. It was good to do some light fishing recently for estuary species with Silas.”
He said his favourite fishing was off the artificial reefs in the bay, catching snapper and tusk fish.
