REDLANDEERS are urged to take care when wading in bay waters and estuaries on the Redlands Coast following a recent stonefish sighting at Raby Bay.

Beachgoers can protect themselves by wearing thick-soled shoes in the water and monitoring children.

Stonefish are active year-round in the bay and estuaries but tend to be more prevalent at this time of year.

They can be hard to spot in shallow waters due to their ability to blend in with the surrounding environment, often resembling rocks or coral.

Other Redlands Coast areas where stonefish have been sighted previously include North Stradbroke, Coochiemudlo and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.

The sting from a stonefish is very painful and victims should seek immediate medical attention.

Residents can report stonefish sightings to the Council on 3829 8999.
