REDLANDS nature enthusiasts Una Sandeman and Vicki Salisbury are inviting locals and visitors to experience the breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, and unique culture of Cleveland’s coastline on a guided walk along the proposed Toondah Wetlands Discovery Trail.

As members of ACF Community Bayside, Una and Vicki are passionate about showcasing this stunning area.

They are hosting a free early morning walk, gathering at 7.30am for an 8am start on Saturday, January 18, at Oyster Point Park, Phelan St, Cleveland. The walk is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it a perfect activity for families and individuals alike.

“It’s time to put this incredible trail on the Redlands’ map,” Una said. “As we walk, we’ll highlight key points of interest and share fascinating insights into the area’s wildlife, habitat, and cultural history. Who knows We might even spot a koala or two while enjoying the scenery.”

The duo is calling on Redland City Council to invest in the trail by installing interpretive signage to explain to visitors about the shorebirds, landscapes, and history that make this area so unique.

“We’ve even created a few signs to show what could be done really easily,” Una said.

Other local councils, such as Brisbane City, Sunshine Coast, and Moreton Bay, have successfully developed eco-tourism opportunities by investing in their portions of the Moreton Bay wetlands. According to Vicki, Redland City could attract similar interest and support by embracing the Toondah Wetlands Discovery Trail.

The trail is part of a broader community-led vision for the future of the Toondah Harbour area, following the Federal Government’s rejection of a proposed high-rise real estate project for the sensitive Ramsar wetlands.

Light refreshments will be served after the walk – and participants will be invited to have their say on A Community Vision for Toondah Harbour, developed by leading landscape architect John Mongard and commissioned by the Toondah Alliance. This vision seeks to balance long-overdue ferry terminal precinct upgrades with conservation of vital surrounding wildlife habitats.

Participants should bring hats, water, sunscreen.
