By Penelope Woods, MAudSt, MAudA (CCP), BMus, is a Masters Qualified Independent Audiologist and Hearing Health Advocate serving the Redlands Community.

As Masters-qualified Audiologists, my team and I are passionate about helping people with their hearing health. Today, I’d like to discuss some important factors to consider when choosing a hearing clinic, aiming to make the process a bit less daunting.

Firstly, ensure the clinician you see is an accredited Audiologist. Audiologists are healthcare professionals with a Master’s degree qualification, equipped to diagnose and provide hearing rehabilitation according to rigorous clinical standards. Not all hearing clinics employ audiologists, so it’s crucial to find one that does.

Another important factor is to find a clinic that is independent from hearing aid manufacturers, without preferred supplier agreements or commissions for fitting hearing aids. This way, you can be confident that the advice you receive is impartial, tailored to your clinical needs, lifestyle, and budget.

Inquire about the clinic’s practices in ensuring the hearing aids’ output matches your prescription. Real ear measurements (REMs) are the clinical gold standard for fitting hearing aids to help you hear clearly. Some clinics might skip this step to save time. A best-practice clinician will use REMs to objectively achieve precise hearing clarity and comfort, so it’s important to check if the clinic includes this in their fitting process.

A patient-centred care approach is crucial for adult hearing rehabilitation. Since hearing loss impacts not just the individual but also their loved ones, a clinic that invites you to bring a significant other to appointments likely understands the importance of social connections. Clinics like mine, which prioritise these practices, offer an exemplary standard of care, ensuring that your hearing goals are achieved.

Lastly, remember that transferring your clinical care is straightforward if you’re unhappy with your current provider. If you’re part of the Australian Government’s Hearing Services Program, we can manage the transfer process for you. As a privately funded patient, you have the right to request a copy of your clinical file. That health data belongs to you.

In summary, take your time to find the right hearing clinic. By considering these factors, you can enjoy the benefits of reputable hearing healthcare,

This information is general in nature.

Patients should consider their personal circumstances and seek the opinion of an accredited Masters Qualified Audiologist.
