MAY is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month and local organisation, Redlands Domestic Violence Awareness, is encouraging awareness and support in the community.
On May 1, setting off the month of recognition and awareness, Redlanders took part in a candlelight vigil and walk to pay respect to those who have lost their lives to domestic and family violence.
The Queensland State Government is promoting the message “it’s in our control to end coercive control” this month, a message shared by RDVA Founder Rabieh Krayem.
“In 2023, we raised $28,000 for four charities, the Night Ninjas, Redlands Community Centre, the Cage Youth Foundation and Maybanke Association Inc. and announced ambassadors,” Mr Krayem said.
“We aim to have a similar event this year to raise funds and awareness for domestic and family violence in the Redlands and make these donations to charities that help victims.
“A lot of it is about getting more men to speak about it because as much as they are part of the problem, they are also part of the solution.
“We really formed to bring awareness to the situation, and also do an annual fundraising event where we raise money to assist local charities involved.
On Wednesday May 1 evening, local government representatives and the community came together at the Raby Bay Harbour.
