IT’S over.
Last Saturday, Mayor Karen Williams made a public declaration signaling the end of her political career.
CR Williams initiated her political journey in 2004, securing the position of Councillor in the then Redland Shire Council. Her ascent led to the Mayorship of Redland City Council in 2012, with successful re-elections in 2016 and 2020.
Approaching two decades in grassroots politics by 2024, CR Williams takes pride in her accomplishments.
However, a significant turning point was a drink driving incident in 2022, altering her trajectory. Now bidding farewell to this phase, she looks forward to reclaiming lost time with her family, especially with the imminent arrival of her third grandchild.
Acknowledging the overshadowing impact of the drink driving charge, she desires recognition for a broader legacy focused on family support, parkland preservation, domestic violence aid, job creation, and youth engagement.
Williams emphasizes her contributions in building parks, combating domestic violence, fostering employment opportunities, and supporting educational initiatives like the Australian Industry Trade College and the local TAFE rejuvenation.
As she departs from the political stage, Williams hopes to be remembered for her multifaceted dedication to community welfare and development.
Meanwhile, Ormiston resident Cindy Corrie has announced her candidacy for Redlands mayor in the upcoming local government election, joining independent candidate Jos Mitchell.

In 2024, Cr Williams will have notched up 2 decades in grassroots politics. That’s no mean feat, it also shows that enough people trusted her to see her re-elected, time and time again.
In an exceptionally long incumbency, the Councillor, notwithstanding her 2022 offence, will have chalked up long lists of friends and foes, wins and losses. There will be things to learn and appreciate and things to clean from the slate.
As we approach the end of 2023, the retirement of Cr Williams gives constituents much to think about – what do we want Redland’s future to look like? Who can best bring these wishes to fruition.
