A NEW shared pathway is set to make it safer and easier for Alexandra Hills residents to walk, ride and get around without getting behind the wheel.

Redland City Council has begun work on the Windemere Rd upgrade, with the route to run from near 40 Windemere Rd through to 74 Brompton St.

The project will include new kerb ramps, traffic islands and upgraded lighting at key crossing points, designed to give pedestrians and cyclists a safer connection through the suburb.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the work was part of Council’s push to make active travel a more practical choice for Redlands Coast residents.

“Council is serious about active travel and, in April this year, adopted the Redlands Coast Active Transport Strategy 2026-2046,” Cr Talty said.

“At the heart of this strategy is a commitment to make it easier for residents and visitors to walk, ride or catch public transport.

“It’s about giving the community more flexibility over how they move around their suburbs and the city.”

Cr Talty said better walking and cycling links could improve community connectivity, health and wellbeing while reducing pressure on parking and vehicle-dominated transport infrastructure.

Division 7 Cr Rowanne McKenzie said the project would deliver improvements at several busy points along the route.

“A kerb ramp and traffic island will be installed at 43 Windemere Road while kerb ramps and traffic islands are planned for 67 and 74 Brompton Street,” Cr McKenzie said. “Lighting will also be upgraded at crossing points.

“These upgrades will improve the safety and accessibility of active transport in the area with the aim of encouraging more people to cycle for everyday travel and recreation.”

The project is supported by the Queensland Government’s Active Transport Grants Program and the Australian Government’s Active Transport Fund.

Works are expected to be completed by November 6, weather and site conditions permitting.
