REDLANDS Coast residents are being urged to keep an eye out for koalas on roads and in backyards as the animals enter their busy breeding season.

The season, which runs from now until the new year, sees koalas travelling more widely in search of mates, food and suitable habitat – sometimes appearing in suburban streets and residential properties during daylight hours.

Redland City Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the increased movement also heightened the dangers facing local koalas.

“While koalas are generally most active after dark, it’s not unusual to see them during daylight hours at this time of year, with many travelling between habitat areas and crossing roads and residential properties,” Cr Talty said.

“They may be moving to new areas, searching for food, responding to weather conditions, or simply travelling between trees during the breeding season.

“As these movements increase, so do the risks they face in urban areas.”

Residents are being asked to drive carefully, particularly between dusk and dawn, and remain alert for wildlife near roadsides.

Council is also encouraging people to secure dogs at night, keep them under effective control outdoors and make backyards safer by installing wildlife escape devices on fences and swimming pools.

Cr Talty said people who spotted a koala should observe it from a distance and allow it to move freely unless it appeared injured, sick or in immediate danger.

Anyone concerned about a koala can contact Redlands’ 24-hour Wildlife Rescue Service on 3833 4031.

Residents can also record sightings through Redlands Coast Koala Watch, helping to improve knowledge of where koalas are moving.
