SENIORS across the Redlands Coast will be celebrated throughout October with concerts, singalongs, high teas, aqua aerobics, arts activities and health-focused events planned for both the mainland and islands.

Redland City Council is supporting Seniors Month by funding eight community-led events, alongside a program of activities at Council venues including libraries, Redland Performing Arts Centre and Redland Art Gallery.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the month was an opportunity to recognise the many ways older residents contributed to the community.

“Senior residents are at the heart of our community,” Cr Talty said.

“They volunteer, mentor, care for loved ones and contribute their knowledge and experience in countless ways.”

Council will help eight community organisations deliver free events aimed at promoting health, wellbeing and social inclusion.

The program includes concerts, singalongs, an arts and craft show, high tea and aqua aerobics.

Council venues will also host health chats, author talks, brain booster activities, ballet, music, singing and art sessions during the month.

Cr Talty said the events supported the goals of Council’s Redlands Coast Age-friendly Action Plan 2021–2026.

“Council is committed to creating an age-friendly community where seniors have opportunities to enjoy healthy, fulfilling lives and remain actively involved in ways that suit them,” she said.

She pointed to Council initiatives available beyond Seniors Month, including the Tech It Easy program, which provides technology support for older residents and has been extended until October 26.

A new six-week Sport and Talk program will begin on October 30, encouraging participants to get active through three walking sports while building social connections.

Council is also involved in a Tea and Teddies event on Russell Island in the lead-up to Seniors Month, bringing seniors and their grandchildren together for a school holiday activity.
