Socceroo pioneer’s proud legacy lives on from Ipswich to Wynnum

HE helped write the opening chapter of Australian football history, built a sporting legacy stretching from Ipswich to the Bayside, and died at just 33.

Yet Clarence “Clarrie” Shenton’s name still carries weight more than a century after he first took the field – honoured by Wynnum Wolves FC, remembered in Ipswich tennis history and permanently recorded as one of the original Socceroos, awarded cap number nine.

From the classrooms of Ipswich Grammar School to the football fields of Wynnum and the green and gold of Australia, Shenton carved out an extraordinary sporting and community legacy in a life cut tragically short.

Clarence William Britton Shenton was born in Nambour on May 27, 1901, the son of Methodist minister Reverend William Shenton and Sarah Ann Britton.

He attended Ipswich Grammar School, beginning an association with the city that would later see him become a prominent figure in its sporting, business and community life.

An outstanding all-round sportsman, Shenton excelled in tennis and cricket.

But after his family moved to Wynnum in 1918, he experimented with rugby and Australian rules before finding his place in association football.

In 1921, he joined the newly formed Wynnum Soccer Club – now Wynnum Wolves FC – for its inaugural season.

Within a year, the talented young centre-half with strong Ipswich roots had been selected for Australia’s historic first international football tour of New Zealand.

Shenton later joined Brisbane club Thistle, serving as vice-captain in 1925, but his connection to Wynnum has endured.

More than a century after his time at the club, the Wolves continue to present the Clarrie Shenton Medal and Perpetual Trophy as their Players’ Player award, ensuring his name is carried by new generations of footballers.

Wynnum Wolves president Rabieh Krayem said it was a rare privilege for the club to have such a direct connection to the earliest days of the national game.

“It’s a special honour for our football club to be able to boast an original Socceroo in Clarrie Shenton – something only a handful of football clubs can lay claim to,” Mr Krayem said.

Mr Krayem said, despite the renewed attention on Shenton’s contribution, the club had not yet been able to establish a present-day connection with his family.

“This year Wynnum Wolves has celebrated its 105th anniversary and we would dearly love to be able to finish out the year by making that personal connection to our original Socceroo number nine,” he said.

By his early 30s, Shenton had represented Australia, helped lay the foundations of one of the Bayside’s enduring football clubs and emerged as a leader in Ipswich sporting and community life.

That future was cut short in December 1934, when he died after a serious illness lasting five months.

He was just 33, leaving behind his wife Ivy and their young son, before being laid to rest at Ipswich Cemetery.

While much of the family’s later story has faded from the public record, Shenton’s sporting legacy has not.

His name remains etched into the history of Australian football, and forever honoured at Wynnum Wolves.
