REDLANDS Coast residents are being invited to help shape the future of access to the city’s beaches, foreshores and waterways.

Redland City Council has opened community consultation on its proposed Foreshore Access Strategy, which will guide how it manages and plans foreshore infrastructure across both the mainland and Southern Moreton Bay Islands.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said feedback gathered through the Shaping Coastal Connections consultation would inform a draft strategy.

“Our foreshores and beaches are some of our city’s most valued natural assets, so I’m pleased to see this opportunity for the community to have a say on how access to these areas can evolve to better support the needs of users,” Cr Talty said.

The strategy will consider Council-managed facilities that help people reach, move along and connect with the foreshore and ocean, including paths, ramps, boardwalks, jetties, pontoons, all-abilities facilities and launching access for non-powered watercraft such as canoes and kayaks.

Cr Talty said Council wanted to hear from regular foreshore users as well as residents and visitors who only occasionally use the city’s coastal areas.

“Whether you use our foreshores regularly or you’ve only visited a few times, we want to hear about your experiences, what you think of the city’s current foreshore facilities, how access could be improved in the future, and potential opportunities,” she said.

“With coastal conditions changing and some existing assets needing replacement soon, Council has identified now as the right time to develop a fit-for-purpose and modern framework that can be applied to the management of foreshore access across the mainland and islands,” she said.

The consultation runs until midnight on Sunday, September 6, with an online survey available through Council’s Your Say page and pop-up sessions planned across the city.

Survey participants can also enter a draw to win one of four beach-themed gift packs – visit Council’s Shaping Coastal Connections Your Say page.
