WORK has begun on a $1 million upgrade of Wellington Point Bowls Club, delivering synthetic greens and additional shade for players and visitors.

The project, funded through the Queensland Government’s Games On! Grassroots Infrastructure Program, was officially launched with a sod-turning ceremony at the club.

The Wellington Point club has served the local community for 36 years and hopes the improvements will help it attract more members and provide a more comfortable playing environment.

Sport and Racing Minister Tim Mander said grassroots clubs played an important role in connecting communities and encouraging people to remain active.

“Clubs like Wellington Point Bowls are the backbone of the community, connecting people and providing an invaluable opportunity for them to be active,” Mr Mander said.

“We want Queensland to be the home of Australian sport and we know the better the facilities, the more people will be inspired to get out on the greens and participate.”

Member for Oodgeroo Amanda Stoker, who helped turn the first sod, said the facilities would support the club as the local population continued to grow.

“The new facilities will provide an even more welcoming environment with greater protection from the sun, allowing more community members of all ages to participate and take their place as ‘Wello Wildcats’,” Ms Stoker said.

“We promised before the state election to help the club make these upgrades a reality, and I’m looking forward to putting them to good use myself when they are completed.”

Wellington Point Bowls Club president Daryl Denman said the improvements would help the club expand and better serve the community.

“Lawn bowls is one of the most inclusive sports in our community, and these improvements will help us attract more members and provide a better and more comfortable experience under the Queensland sun,” Mr Denman said.

“This is a really exciting day for everyone at our club and we are incredibly grateful to the Queensland Government for its support through the Games On! program and the Redlands Sporting Club.”

The Games On! program is supporting 119 grassroots sporting infrastructure projects across Queensland as part of preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
