Heritage trail brings history alive

A REFRESHED heritage trail along the Wynnum-Manly foreshore is inviting residents and visitors to step back in time while exploring one of Brisbane’s most popular waterfront destinations.

The updated Wynnum Heritage Trail features new interactive elements designed to make local history more accessible.

Stretching along the Wynnum-Manly foreshore, the trail now includes historical photographs, digital maps and QR code-linked markers that allow visitors to uncover stories from the area’s past as they walk.

The free attraction forms part of Brisbane City Council’s broader efforts to create more recreational and cultural experiences across the city’s suburbs while encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors.

New heritage-themed artwork installations will be progressively introduced at key locations along the foreshore, while a virtual tour of the historic Shire Clerk’s Cottage offers visitors an insight into Wynnum’s early development.

Among the 27 sites featured on the trail are Britannia, the Waterloo Bay Hotel, Kitchener Memorial and Park, Pandanus Beach, Darling Point, the Wynnum T Jetty and the Wynnum Wading Pool.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the project reflected Brisbane’s reputation as Australia’s lifestyle capital.

“Being Australia’s lifestyle capital means creating experiences that encourage people to get out, explore and connect with our suburbs,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Our city’s history shouldn’t just be confined to museums – it should be discovered in the suburbs, streets and places where Brisbane’s incredible lifestyle has been shaped.”

Wynnum-Manly Ward Councillor Alex Givney said the trail added another dimension to the Bayside experience.

“The Wynnum foreshore already offers the best waterfront experience in Brisbane, and this trail adds a meaningful layer to that,” Cr Givney said.

She thanked the Wynnum- Manly Historical Society for its support and guidance throughout the project.

“I know that both local residents and visitors alike will enjoy engaging with our Bayside stories as they explore all that Wynnum has to offer,” she said.

The refreshed trail also supports the long-term vision outlined in the Wynnum Manly Lota Foreshores Master Plan and the Wynnum Centre Suburban Renewal Precinct Plan.
