VICTORIA Point State High School has marked a milestone of generosity and community spirit with senior students raising an impressive $10,481 for the World’s Greatest Shave.
The event, held on June 8, saw students step onto the school stage alongside local hairdressers and a barber to shave their heads or cut their hair for donation, a bold act that drew cheers from classmates, teachers and families.
The donated hair will go on to support two causes – the creation of wigs for people undergoing cancer treatment, and environmental programs that use hair to help clean up oceans.
For many students, the decision to participate was deeply personal.
Year 12 student Mia Millward, who led the organisation of the event, said the response from her peers was overwhelming.
“It was a heart-warming feeling because people were willing to help others,” she said.
“They were willing to sacrifice something for people they didn’t know.”
For Mia, the cause hits close to home.
“My neighbour has cancer at the moment, and she has been fighting it for 13 years,” she said.
“Many thought it was a good idea and for a good cause.”
The school community rallied behind the initiative, with students fundraising in the weeks leading up to the shave.
Reaching and surpassing their $10,000 goal became a point of pride, especially for the seniors who wanted to leave a meaningful legacy in their final year.
Teachers said the event highlighted the strong sense of compassion among students, many of whom had never taken part in a charity shave before.
The involvement of local hairdressers also reinforced the connection between the school and the wider Redlands community.
