A BUSINESS case to investigate the possible future duplication of the E.G.W. Wood Bridge on Rickertt Rd, Thorneside is now underway, with Redland City Council confirming the project remains unfunded beyond the initial study phase.
The State Government has committed $500,000 towards the business case, which will examine options for replacing or duplicating the bridge and upgrading surrounding single-lane road sections spanning Tingalpa Creek.
Redland City Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the study would help determine the scope and feasibility of any future upgrade.
“The scope of the business case work is to determine the cost-benefit analysis of either replacing or duplicating the existing bridge and upgrading the single-lane sections on both the southern side in Redland City and the northern side in Brisbane,” Cr Talty said.
She said the purpose of the business case was to better inform decision- makers about the challenges and costs associated with the project.
The study is expected to be completed by mid-2027.
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the funding agreement would allow progress on a long-discussed project.
“This business case is a critical first step for a project that has been long overdue,” Mr Mickelberg said.
“We are working with Council, and together we will continue working to deliver for the local community.”
Division 10 councillor Paul Bishop said the bridge remained an important commuter link between Brisbane and Redlands.
“The initial business case will explore options to upgrade the bridge, assess the project’s complexities and scale, and help guide future decisions and requirements,” Cr Bishop said.
Council confirmed the business case is only an investigatory first step, with no construction funding currently secured from any level of government.
The project is also not included in Council’s current capital expenditure forecast.
