A NEW community initiative aimed at reconnecting residents with the outdoors and each other is officially underway, with Cycling Without Age – Redlands Coast launching its first rides.
After months of planning and volunteer effort, the program began operations on April 15, offering free tri-
shaw rides along the Raby Bay foreshore for older residents, people living with disability, and their carers.
The service is built around the global Cycling Without Age movement, which promotes what organisers describe as “the right to wind in your hair”, giving people who may have limited mobility the chance to experience the simple joy of being outdoors.
Regular rides will operate three days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday – between 9.30am and midday, with a scenic route running from Raby Bay Harbourside to Raby Bay Foreshore Park and return.
Each session will run for about 30 minutes per booking.
Organisers say additional sessions, including community events and group bookings, may also be scheduled as the program grows.
Bookings are now open for older adults, people with disability, aged care providers, carers and family members, with a carer required per ride where applicable.
The launch marks a major milestone for the local chapter, which has also secured a Redland City Council Rapid Response grant to support equipment, safety measures and ongoing operations.
Organisers said the funding approval was a significant step toward building a safe and sustainable program, while also highlighting the strength of community backing behind the initiative.
The program is entirely volunteer run, with trained “pilots”, “scouts” and “concierges” supporting each ride.
A call is also out for more volunteers to join the growing team, with organisers thanking those who have already contributed their time and effort to bring the project to life.
Community members can also support the initiative through donations or by contributing through Containers for Change, helping ensure rides remain free and accessible.
A newly launched website will serve as a central hub for bookings, updates and volunteer information as the service expands across the Redlands Coast.
Organisers say the launch is just the beginning, with hopes the program will continue to grow and provide more opportunities for connection, inclusion and shared experiences.
