MAJOR upgrades have been locked in for community facilities across Brisbane, with Wynnum’s Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre set to benefit from key improvement works aimed at supporting local residents and long-running volunteer groups.
The Schrinner Council announced a suite of upgrades across multiple suburban sporting hubs, including projects at North Star Football Club in Zillmere, Oxenham Park in Nundah, Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre in Wynnum and Runcorn Pool.
At Wynnum, the Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre — a volunteer-run facility that has supported the community for more than 40 years — will undergo roof replacement and structural reinforcement works to secure its long-term future. Works are expected to begin next month.
Councillor Alex Givney highlighted the importance of the centre to the local community.
“Waterloo Bay Leisure Centre is a busy and supportive community facility that provides many activities and services to residents of all ages and backgrounds.
“These upgrades will ensure keep the centre is ready to support our community for years to come.”
The investment forms part of a broader push by council to strengthen suburban infrastructure and support grassroots sport, recreation and community connection.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the upgrades reflected a strong focus on suburban investment.
“More than 80 per cent of our budget is being invested in the suburbs, including in our city’s suburban sporting hubs.
“Local clubs help bring our community together, playing an important role in shaping our city’s reputation as Australia’s lifestyle capital.
“These upgrades will make sure local clubs, pools and community spaces can continue to be places for people to gather for many years to come.”
Across Brisbane, the upgrade program includes improvements to change rooms, accessibility features, amenities and structural facilities at key sporting and community venues.
While works at Wynnum are focused on strengthening an established community hub, other projects include new change rooms and accessible facilities at Oxenham Park, roof and amenities upgrades at North Star Football Club, and improvements to facilities at Runcorn Pool.
Council said the upgrades were designed to support local clubs, volunteers and the many residents who rely on these facilities each week.
