Cleveland high school student Brianna Morrison has won the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year gong at the Queensland Training Awards.

The awards showcased the great work in vocational education and training (VET) across the state, with categories for apprentices, trainees, vocational students, teachers, trainers, training providers and employers.

The regional winners were announced at the local Queensland Training Awards event held on the Gold Coast on July 22.

This year state-wide nominations increased by more than 40 per cent from last year, with more than 210 regional finalists selected from more than 800 nominations.

Brianna Morrison was named Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year after achieving her Certificate II in Marine Habitat Conservation and Restoration.

Brianna completed a VET Marine Placement Program called ‘Healing Sea Country’ which was offered through Envirotech Education.

This course deepened her passion and understanding of marine ecosystems, and she now aspires to work in coral reef restoration.

Along with her 2023 Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ambassador role at Cleveland District State High School, Brianna has developed confidence, built friendships and overcome challenges.

Training and Skills Development Minister Di Farmer said the 2023 Queensland Training Awards highlighted the state’s many high achievers.

“Providing Queenslanders with opportunities to get a job, grow their skills and have a great lifestyle is a priority of the Palaszczuk government,” Ms Farmer said.
