Russell Island police laid a total of 34 charges during January, with offences spanning drugs, traffic, violence and property damage.

Police charged offenders with six drug offences, 11 traffic offences, three wilful damage offences, two assaults and two weapon offences over the month.

In response to an increase in traffic offences and ongoing community complaints about speeding, dangerous driving and parking issues at the Russell Island ferry terminal, police stepped up high-visibility patrols and roadside breath testing.

Those operations have already resulted in more than 20 traffic infringement notices being issued for driving-related offences.

Police are also continuing to actively enforce parking regulations at the ferry terminal to address persistent safety and access concerns.

Separately, a 49-year-old man from Collingwood Park has been charged with stealing, wilful damage and assault following an alleged incident on January 11.

Police allege the man was caught stealing from a grocery store about 2pm before assaulting another man when confronted and leaving the scene.

It is further alleged he then approached a second man outside a neighbouring business and assaulted him without provocation, causing minor injuries.

Officers located the alleged offender shortly after and took him into custody.

He is due to appear in Cleveland Magistrates Court on March 3.

Police are urging the community to continue reporting suspicious or unlawful behaviour.

In an emergency, call 000. For non-urgent matters, contact Policelink on 131 444.

If the local police station is closed, residents can use the blue phone at the front of the station to speak directly with a police call taker, who will notify Russell Island police.

Information can also be provided online via the Queensland Police suspicious activity form, available 24 hours a day, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
