AT 94 years of age, Ken Saunders refuses to slow down.
The Bolton Clarke Winders Lodge resident proved age is no barrier to determination after completing the 5km event at the Gold Coast Marathon, adding another chapter to a remarkable running journey spanning more than four decades.
Competing alongside his daughter Linda Saunders, Ken crossed the finish line in 54 minutes, this year aided by his trusty walker, affectionately named “Whizzer”.
“I appreciate the fact that I can still participate, even if it is with my walker which I fondly call ‘Whizzer’,” Ken said.
“Even though I’m a little slower now, I’m still competitive and held two records at the Gold Coast Marathon in the 90-94 age group for the 10km and 5km up until this year.
“I was hoping to do it in about 50 minutes and got it in 54 minutes!”
Far from signalling the end of his running career, the result has only fuelled Ken’s desire to return next year when he enters the 95-99 age category, with his sights firmly set on another marathon record.
Running remains a central part of his life.
Despite recently moving from the co-located retirement village into residential aged care at Winders Lodge due to ongoing vertigo, Ken has continued his regular training routine with the support of staff.
“We still go running almost every day – Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays – and we are part of a few run clubs in the area,” he said.
“I was living in the retirement village here but I got to the stage where I couldn’t manage my vertigo so I’ve been here in aged care for about a month now.
“I was concerned that maybe once I moved in here I wouldn’t be able to make it out to do my runs but I’m grateful for the amount of encouragement I’ve received.
Ken’s passion for distance running began in his 40s after some encouragement from workmates while operating a milk run in Campbelltown.
More than 40 years later, that enthusiasm remains as strong as ever – Ken is determined to continue defending his local Parkrun record.
