BAYSIDE families are invited to shape safer school journeys, with consultation now open for the Wynnum and Manly Safer School Precincts program.
An Adrian Schrinner commitment from the 2024 Brisbane City Council Election, the program aims to make the school commute safer while easing congestion on local streets.
This will be the third precinct to get underway as part of the initiative and covers an 85ha area that includes Wynnum State High School, Manly State School and St John Vianney’s Primary School.
The consultation follows similar projects in the Mansfield and Kedron precincts, where more than 1000 participants shared their ideas on how to make their suburbs safer.
In Mansfield, more than 800 people contributed 29,000 pieces of feedback, identifying concerns around congestion, unsafe driver behaviour and the need for smoother and wider footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings and improved drop-off and pick-up zones.
In Kedron, more than 300 residents had their say, with the consultation report to be released this month.
Feedback from each community will inform detailed plans for local improvements.
All participating schools will also join Council’s Active School Travel Program, which has successfully doubled the number of students walking to or from school in some cases.
Since 2004, 177 Brisbane schools and more than 147,000 students have taken part in the program.
Community consultation on the Wynnum and Manly Safer Schools Program will run until October 26.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the Council was keen to deliver programs to ease congestion as the city continued to grow.
