IN just one year, the 98 Club has grown from a casual group of car enthusiasts meeting at a Capalaba service station to a thriving club with more than 120 members.

The club, which originally started with morning coffee meet-ups at a service station, has become a welcoming community for people with a shared passion for vehicles.

David Levey, the club’s president and a Wynnum local, said the focus had always been on the people, not just the cars.

“It’s about the members, not the cars,” said Mr Levey, who drives a 1966 Mustang.

“We just wanted a space to enjoy each other’s company, chat about cars, and go for the occasional drive. It’s really grown from there.”

From humble beginnings, the club’s spirit quickly evolved into something deeper.

Mr Levey recalled a moment when the club’s family-like atmosphere was put to the test.

When a wheelchair- bound member’s car broke down, a quick phone call ensured he was picked up and on his way within half an hour.

The club, which hosts two car shows a month in Cleveland and Redland Bay, attracts other car clubs and displays a wide range of vehicles – from vintage classics to modern machines, and even the occasional motorbike.
