WITH the Over 70s World Cup being played at Redlands United Football Club in Cleveland from October 12 to 16, its impact is expected to reach well beyond the pitch.

Around 500 players from 25 teams and six countries are taking part, joined by an estimated 1000 supporters and partners for the week-long event.

Falling in the middle of Seniors Month, the tournament presents an opportunity to showcase the Redlands Coast while delivering a welcome boost to local accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants, retailers, tourism operators and transport services.

The flow-on benefit will begin at Redlands United, with increased activity through the clubhouse and canteen, before extending across the region as visitors explore local attractions and businesses.

Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce president Aaron Weir said multi-day events could create benefits across the whole community.

“Events like the Over 70s World Cup create a ripple effect throughout our community, generating positive energy across local businesses, tourism operators and community groups,” Mr Weir said.

“Visitors not only attend the event, but they also explore our islands, dine in local restaurants, visit attractions, shop in local stores and experience our unique lifestyle.”

Organiser Siggy has worked with local businesses and organisations to help welcome visitors and encourage them to make the most of their Redlands stay.

The tournament website promotes local attractions and provides practical information for visitors, while Wednesday was left free of games to allow players, partners and families to get out and explore.

Businesses have also responded with tailored offers, visitor experiences and transport options, while accommodation providers are already reporting bookings linked to the tournament.

The event has highlighted the value of early engagement between organisers, businesses and community groups.

While local organisations can help make introductions, an active organising team is critical to turning those connections into real opportunities for local operators.

Inspired by the World Cup, the Chamber has developed a Redlands Events Business Activation Plan aimed at better connecting future event organisers with businesses, venues, tourism operators and community organisations.

The plan encourages conversations to begin up to 12 months before a major event, giving local businesses time to develop accommodation, dining, tourism, transport and retail offers around visiting crowds.

For future event organisers, the message is simple – reach out early.

With time to prepare, events such as the Over 70s World Cup can deliver benefits from the host club through to businesses and community organisations across the Redlands Coast.
