Woolworths has confirmed it will introduce a $20 service fee for grocery deliveries to residents on Karragarra, Lamb, Macleay, North Stradbroke, Russell, and Coochiemudlo Islands, citing the high costs of transporting goods by sea.
A Woolworths spokesperson said: “We remain committed to serving our customers on Karragarra, Lamb, Macleay, North Stradbroke, Russell, and Coochiemudlo Islands.
“We understand how important it is that these communities continue to have access to grocery delivery, and as the only major supermarket still delivering to them, we need to ensure our service remains viable.
“Residents will be familiar with the additional costs involved in getting many goods onto the islands via sea, and this new service fee will help us continue to cover these costs on an ongoing basis.
“We are introducing a service fee to continue offering the convenience of door-to-door delivery across our island communities and we thank our customers for their understanding.”
The service fee will be applied to deliveries to postcodes 4183 and 4184.
For Woolworths Delivery Unlimited subscribers, standard delivery fees remain free, meaning the $20 service fee is the only additional charge.
For other customers, delivery fees will reduce from $25 to $15, meaning the total cost with the service fee will be $35.
Residents subscribed to Delivery Unlimited who feel the new structure no longer suits them will have the option to cancel and receive a refund for the remainder of their subscription by calling Woolworths’ Priority Customer Care Line on 1300 969 609.
Woolworths delivery services cover 96 per cent of the Australian population, but only these six Moreton Bay islands are affected by the new fee.
