WHEN David Williams was given an orchid as a gift 18 years ago, he never imagined it would spark a lifelong passion.

Today, the Wellington Point resident tends to between 500 and 600 orchids, spending at least four to five hours each week caring for his collection.

Now, he is in the midst of re-potting – an annual task to refresh the plants.

“The bark they are potted in breaks down over time and becomes toxic to the plant. So, this is something I do every year,” Mr Williams said.

His knowledge has been shaped not only by personal research but also by sharing tips with fellow enthusiasts at the Redlands Orchid Society.

The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Birkdale Sports Club, Randall Rd.

“I enjoy the club because we can learn so much from each other. But it is also a great social outlet,” Mr Williams said.

He is about to begin his third term as society president and said his love of orchids had grown as his understanding deepened.

“I just enjoy the flowers. I also enjoy the company and time spent with people who can teach one another little things.

I am learning – always learning,” he said.

He has no favourite orchid, instead appreciating the diversity of the flowers he grows in two shade-houses at his home.

“As a hobby, it does get out of hand sometimes, but there is nothing like just going in and appreciating the display on offer,” he said.

The society’s best orchids will be showcased at its spring show from 8.30am to 3pm this Saturday at the Birkdale Sports Club.

The event will feature displays, orchids for sale and potting demonstrations.
