THE former State Labor Government’s $95 million proposal to build a 1200-space, multi-storey car park at Weinam Creek is facing strong criticism.

Member for Redlands Rebecca Young said the project would have provided just 71 extra parking spaces, costing over $1.3 million per space.

Mrs Young has raised alarm over the unfunded $80 million component of the project, questioning the planning and financial responsibility behind the initiative.

She described it as an example of the previous government’s failure to address the needs of the community.

“This is exactly why Queenslanders wanted a fresh start, and I am relieved to have discovered this major failure before it’s too late.

“I am committed to a multi-storey car park at Weinam Creek; but the current plan is not in line with community expectations.

“I am looking to validate this through doing the work the former Labor Government failed to do,” she said.

Mrs Young criticised the previous government for not listening to local concerns, and failing to adequately plan for the growing demands of the region.

“They failed to listen, they failed in the planning, and failed to provide what our growing community needs,” she said.

“Unlike Labor, I am prepared to do this work to ensure everyone has their voices heard.

“We went to the election with a commitment to respect your money, and I am doing what we said we would do by taking the time to meet the expectations of the community with this solution.”

As part of her review, Mrs Young has launched a public survey to gather feedback from residents, particularly those in the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) and Redland Bay areas who are affected by the development.

“If you want your voice heard on what the former Labor Government planned for the area, I need to hear from you,” she said.
