OLDER Redlands residents are being urged to lace up their sneakers for the return of a free walking-sports program credited with getting people active, social and smiling.

Redland City Council’s Sport and Talk program returns on Friday after its first run proved so popular it was extended beyond its original four-week schedule.

The six-week program offers walking basketball, softball and football – gentler versions of familiar sports designed to improve fitness without the high-impact demands.

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said Sport and Talk was about more than exercise.

“Sport and Talk is a free, low-impact walking sports program designed for older adults, and aims to improve physical health, boost mental wellbeing and build social connections,” Cr Talty said.

“Council is committed to ensuring that people of all ages can access the city’s community facilities and outdoor spaces.”

The first Sport and Talk pilot began in April with a Come and Try Day and structured sessions in the three sports.

It was extended for a further four weeks after a strong community response.

Sport and Recreation portfolio representative Cr Jason Colley said the program offered a safe way for older residents to reconnect with sport and with each other.

“What is just as important, however, is the social aspect and the initial program was very successful in helping residents connect with others in the community and have some fun,” Cr Colley said.

The latest program is being delivered with RedCity Roar Basketball Association, Redlands Softball Association, Football Queensland and new partner Capalaba Bulldogs Football Club.

A Come and Try Day will be held at PCYC Capalaba from 9.30-11.30am on Friday.

Walking basketball begins at PCYC Capalaba on Tuesdays from November 3.
