October has seen all four new Southern Moreton Bay Island ferry terminals switched over for operation with minor works being completed on the transition of the old jetties into community pontoons.

The $48.6m ferry terminals upgrade project has delivered new terminals for Russell, Macleay, Lamb and Karragarra islands, providing a wonderful gateway experience to our beautiful islands for locals and visitors.

This important infrastructure for our island communities who travel back and forth from island to mainland have been designed to cater for the growth these communities have experienced. They are also larger and provide modern and safer amenity with their accessible pontoon and waiting areas.

In addition to these new terminals, the old terminals have been repurposed to provide community on water access for our recreational boaties.

The upgrade project has been undertaken with the community participating in the journey from the design open house workshops with architects, engineers and planners and other key stakeholders that have delivered an incredible community asset in vital island infrastructure.

The contractor team from The Jetty Specialist have worked hard over the past two years to deliver all four terminals whilst maintaining safe operations of the existing terminals for the island communities during the construction process.

The new SMBI ferry terminal project was undertaken by the state government in partnership with Redland City Council, who will now take over their ongoing operation and maintenance.
