STAFF at Victoria Point Sharks Sporting Club have stepped up for a gruelling 72-hour challenge, walking more than 1,100km and raising more than $40,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
The club’s “Laps for Leukaemia” Charity Walk, held from February 12 to 15, saw staff members collectively complete more than 2,500 laps, smashing their initial fundraising target of $25,000.
By the end of the event, the team had raised $40,096, putting the club well on its way toward its broader $100,000 fundraising goal for the year.
Victoria Point Sharks Sporting Club Promotions and Marketing Manager Theresa Chapman said the event was a powerful display of determination and community spirit.
“With every ache, pain, and blister, came extraordinary guts, determination, and resilience,” she said.
“Our team displayed incredible support and encouragement for each other and were clearly determined to make a difference.
“To be able to end a gruelling 72-hour walk and come away with a massive $40,096 raised for the Leukaemia Foundation was one of the proudest moments for our club.”
Among the standout efforts was General Manager Rhys Faint, who personally walked 333 laps — around 150km during the event.
Funds raised will help the Leukaemia Foundation support Australians living with blood cancer, including funding research aimed at reaching zero deaths from blood cancer by 2035, providing free accommodation near hospitals, transporting patients to treatment and offering emotional and practical support.
Ms Chapman said the event’s success was made possible by strong backing from sponsors and the wider Redlands community.
“The support we received from all of our sponsors, in particular our two major sponsors Pinnacle Project Solutions and Redlands Rugby League Old Boys, was incredible,” she said.
“Not to mention Naturally Cooked Sunscreen, Fitstop Wellington Point, Soleil RMT and X Physique Massage Therapy, Don ‘Jacko’ Jackson and BayFM 100.3, who all played a huge part in getting us through the weekend both physically and mentally.
“It was overwhelming to see so much support from our club members, committee members, affiliated sporting clubs, Night Ninjas, Rebecca Young MP, friends, family and the broader Redlands community.
“We could not have done it without them.”
The club hopes the strong start will help it reach its $100,000 fundraising goal for the Leukaemia Foundation in 2026.
