Tuesday Evening’s re-scheduled Round 6 NPL Men’s clash with Moreton City Excelsior at the Compass Grounds in Cleveland did not disappoint in excitement value. With the Redlands supporter group, “The Devils Den” in fine voice the atmosphere at Compass Grounds lifted the Red Devil players.
The 1st half was all Redlands as the Red Devils had the majority of possession and Moreton City defended stoutly.
Straight from the opening whistle the Red Devils came out fast and applied the pressure. The City Keeper was kept busy saving 2 shots and tipping 3 other goal bound efforts over the post.
Despite the domination of possession by the Red Devils the score remained 0-0 at half time. The 2nd half continued in the same way as the 1st half, Redlands continuing to push on the City goal.
Shots were saved by the Keeper, went just past the post or balls across the face of goal went tantalizing just out of reach of the approaching Redlands players.
Mid-way through the halfCity started to make attacking raids on the Redlands goal and Keeper Will Smith was in the action making a brilliant 1 on 1 save. Moreton City got the break-through goal from a corner on one of their few attempts on goal.
Redlands didn’t drop their heads they continued to press on and as few minutes later Michael Lee hit the post with the City Keeper beaten.
Despite the strong performance it was just not to be for Redlands, City taking the win 0-1.Post game Redlands United Head Coach Griff Mansfield commented, “Happy to see the boys put in an improved performance despite the disappointing result.”
This week Redlands are at home again on Wednesday evening when they host Brisbane City FC in Round 5 of the Kappa Queensland Cup with a 7.30pm kick Off. On Saturday 4 May we are on the road over to Richlands, where we take on Lions FC in our final Kappa Pro Series match at 7.30pm.
