A COMMUNITY-led environmental pledge inspired by the internationally recognised Palau Pledge has been proposed for the Redlands.

Macleay Island environmental advocate Kevin Hughes is calling on Redland City Council to trial a 12-month pilot program encouraging residents and visitors to become active stewards of the region’s natural and cultural assets.

Addressing Redland City Council’s general meeting, Mr Hughes said the proposed Redlands Visitor Pledge Initiative would be developed collaboratively with the Quandamooka people, schools, community organisations, tourism operators, veterans’ groups and residents.

The initiative aims to encourage people to protect the environment, respect cultural heritage and strengthen community stewardship across the city, particularly around the bay islands and the Moreton Bay Marine Park.

Mr Hughes said the proposal was inspired by the internationally recognised Palau Pledge.

He stressed the proposal extended well beyond tourism, describing it as an opportunity to create a lasting environmental legacy.
